Five easy ways to improve your Android’s battery life

Does the battery of your Android phone last more than a day? If it does, you deserve an award! Most Android users complain about poor (or absolutely terrible) battery life of their smartphones. While we agree that smartphones are battery hogs, a few small tips here and there will definitely help your phone run for a much longer time. Here are five ways to boost your Android’s battery life.

Display
The most important part of your phone when it comes to battery life saving is the display. If you’ve been keeping your display on 100 brightness at all times, congratulations, you have found the single biggest problem with your phone’s battery life. Screen brightness is inversely proportional to the battery life of the phone. In simple words, keep the brightness low!

Automatic brightness works well but unless you have a lot of viewing to do directly under sunlight, you don’t need a very bright screen. Also, ensure that your phone’s screen timeout isn’t left at 15 minutes. Have a short 30 second screen timeout. You’ll notice a considerable improvement in your phone’s battery life, if you follow even this one routine.

Connectivity
Most people forget to turn off their Wi-Fi when they leave their homes or offices. They also forget to turn off GPS when location-based services aren’t required. We have observed in all our battery tests that Wi-Fi takes up a considerable amount of battery life, so if you’re on the move, don’t keep the Wi-Fi signal on. Your phone will constantly look for networks to connect to. Keeping a power control widget on your home screen at all times to help you quickly see the connectivity options that are required to stay on, and those that aren’t.
Another important thing to note is to ensure that your phone is near your Wi-Fi router. If it is at the edge of your router's Wi-Fi zone, it’ll constantly trying to connect to the Wi-Fi. For houses that have routers installed at one end, and with multiple walls, this becomes a necessity.

Home Screen
The contents on your homescreen are extremely essential in deciding how long the battery will last. Kick the kitten out of your phone’s animated live wallpapers, remove the Facebook and Twitter live feed widgets. It’s important to keep the home screen clutter-free and only keep the things that are very important to you. Even if they’re Google’s live wallpapers, it’s best you keep them off your home screen. If constantly wanting to have Twitter, Facebook updates is important, keep an update time interval so polling is restricted to minimum.

Syncing
If e-mail is a priority, keep only email a priority. If the rest isn’t important, don’t have it on auto sync at all time. With auto sync on for all your applications and services, you significantly suck up the juice in your battery. You can simply turn off syncing for Finance, News, Facebook, Twitter, Weather and other options, unless it’s absolutely necessary. Or, as mentioned earlier, enter the settings and tweak the options. For example, you don’t need to know the weather every minute; keep an update interval of about 2 - 3 hours.

Battery Use
Android has a neat little function that lets you view what is taking up most of the battery life. System Settings –> Battery Use lets you view quantitatively what task or function is taking up your phone's battery life. As a test, we tried reducing the brightness to a minimum and the screen tab showed a significant drop in percentage. It’s also worth mentioning that you need to shut down games and apps, and not let them stay running in the background. The more strain you put on the performance of the handset, the quicker the battery will drain out. Does your phone has a ‘cool’ feature like, say, Smart Stay? Turn it off, please.

Last but not least, do check out our battery life tests on the phones we review. They’ll give you a clear idea of the battery’s performance, in case you’re picking up a new phone. That’s sums up our list. Have some more tips? Let our readers know in the comments section below.

How to: Install Windows 8 on a pen drive

Windows 8, the latest edition to Microsoft's OS evolution is making big waves in the PC arena. We are sure that many of you are eagerly waiting to try out the new Windows 8 Preview on your PCs, to have a first look and glimpse of what Microsoft has in store for you with the new operating system. Installing Windows 8 on your PC, which already has Windows 7 or Windows XP installed can be quite a task—backing up data, clearing space for the new OS, reinstalling, and so on. However, before that, the pain of burning the downloaded ISO file on a DVD or on a USB pen drive to get the installation ready also makes it a killing task. We shall show you how you can relax and enjoy the complete features of Windows 8 on your existing PC without going through any of the above cumbersome exercises and run the new operating system in less than half the time.

This How to will reveal the installation of Windows 8 on any USB storage and then running the operating system directly from the USB drive, itself. You will not have to go through any of the painful set-up procedures that the set-up installer asks, while installing Windows 8 on your PC. All you need to do is download a simple utility, a 16GB or higher USB storage drive, the Windows 8 ISO file, WinRAR archiver and your existing PC. Before we begin, we would like you to know that using a USB pen drive will suffice, but since the speed of a regular USB pen drive is very sluggish, we recommend using an external USB storage drive.
Step 1
Step 1

To begin with, assuming you have a PC that already has Windows 7 running and WinRAR installed, extract the file ‘install.wim’ from the Windows 8 ISO file using WinRAR. This file will be located under the folder ‘Sources’ and is around 2GB in size. Extract it to the desktop. Now go ahead and download a tiny 500 KB utility, called ‘GimageX’ from the ‘http://tinyurl.com/gimagexv2’ and extract the file to a folder on your desktop. This folder will have both the 32-bit and 64-bit utility. Choose the appropriate one depending on the operating system that you are already running on your PC. Now, before we use the utility, we have to prepare the USB drive for installing Windows 8. Make sure you have all your data backed up from the drive, as we would need to clean out the drive completely. Proceed ahead when ready.
Step 2
Step 2

Plug-in the USB drive, wait for a while, if the drivers are not yet installed and let the system recognize the new drive. Now start the Windows command prompt and type the following commands one after the other as given below:
  • Diskpart (This built-in utility will help repartition and format the new drive)
  • List disk (This command will list all the drives present on your system. Note down the drive number of your USB drive)
  • Select disk # (Replace the # with the drive number that represents your USB drive in the list)
  • Clean (This command will wipe the entire partition table of the USB drive)
  • Create partition primary (This command will create a primary partition on the USB drive)
  • Select partition 1 (This command will select the primary partition for the rest of the process)
  • Format fs=ntfs quick (This command will quick format the primary partition in NTFS file format)
  • Assign (This command will assign a drive letter to the new partition for Windows to work on)
  • Active (This command will make the partition active to enable booting)
  • Exit (Closes the DISKPART utility)

Now that the drive is ready for installation of the new operating system, start the GimageX utility and click on the tab ‘apply’. In the source field, specify the ‘INSTALL.WIM’ file, which you earlier extracted from the Windows ISO file. In the destination field, select the USB drive letter that you just got ready. Let all the settings in the remaining fields be untouched and hit the ‘Apply’ button. GimageX will not extract the contents of the Install.wim file, which contains the necessary Windows 8 folders and system files on the USB drive. Note: This procedure should take a few minutes and will depend on the speed of your USB drive.

If you are using a regular pendrive, then the time taken will be longer than on any 2.5-inch external USB storage drive. Once done, GimageX will display that the process is complete. Exit the GimageX utility and start the command prompt again. We now need to make the USB drive bootable in order to run Windows 8 from the USB drive. For this, we will have to specify a command from the command prompt window. Run the following command as below.
Step 3
Step 3

In the command above, F: is the drive letter of the USB drive where the Windows 8 files have been extracted to earlier by the GimageX utility. Remember to replace the drive letter of your USB drive, accordingly. This command will take a few seconds to transfer the necessary booting files to the USB drive. Once done, you can quit from the command prompt.
Step 4
Step 4

That’s it! Shut down your PC, get into the BIOS, enable booting from the USB drive and restart the PC. Your PC will now boot from the USB drive directly into Windows 8. All that is needed in the next step is to specify the serial key and give details, such as username and password. Windows will be up and running in no time and install the necessary drivers in the background. You can now go ahead and configure Windows 8, as you wish and install all your software and applications, as you would on a new PC. All software and applications will be installed on the USB drive by default, unless specified with a different path.
Step 5
Step 5 - Simply replace the drive name ''h" with "F"

Make sure you have an Internet connection set-up for your PC, if you are using your Microsoft Live (Hotmail) account to be linked with your Windows 8 installation. Once done, you can simply shut down, disconnect your USB drive and get back to your older operating system without any trace of having Windows 8 installed on your PC. You can plug-in this USB drive on any other PC and have Windows 8 running on that PC.

You can also use this trick to install Windows 8 on an internal hard drive and have Windows 8 installed without having to go through the entire process of installing the OS using a DVD ROM.

Lumia 610 users in India to get Nokia Music and Mix Radio

Nokia has launched its Windows Phone enabled Lumia 610 in the Indian market. The handset will be made available with the Nokia Music and Mix Radio. Moreover, it isn’t just the Lumia 610 but the Lunia 800 and Lumia 710 that will also get these music attributes once the updates begin to roll out. Nokia Music brings to users more than 40 lakh music tracks to download, without any charges. However, the Nokia Music subscription for Lumia users is expected to be for just 4 months. After this subscription period, users will require recharge vouchers to extend the subscription.
Nokia Lumia 610 now official!

More music for Nokia...

This new Nokia Music feature allows downloading DRM free tracks. This will enable users to transfer the downloaded songs to other devices too. As the subscription expires, users can keep the tracks that they’ve downloaded. On the other hand, Nokia Mix Radio is a streaming music service for Lumia phones that allows listening to music tracks across multiple genres, streamed directly to your phone. Users can also save these tracks for offline listening, in case of no Wi-Fi coverage. It allows discovering new music as well. In Nokia Music service, you can transfer tracks from the device, but Nokia Mix Radio doesn’t allow doing so.

Nokia had made the Lumia 610 official at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February and ever since, it’s been on and off the news radar with details about its impending release, its pricing and the fragmentation that it brings to the table, with Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh. The 610 is fuelled by an 800 Mhz single core and 256 MB RAM. It is backed by a 1300 mAh Li-ion/Li-polymer battery and features a USB 2.0 high-speed through micro USB connector. The device is quite portable at 131.5 g.

As of now, the Lumia 610 is the cheapest WP7 handset available in India. The Nokia Lumia 610 allows users to keep in touch with friends with ease, while providing instant access to social networks and by bringing all mobile, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn contacts to one place. It also makes it easier to browse the Web with Internet Explorer and to access games through Xbox Live. The Lumia 610 comes with Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, Nokia Transport and Nokia Music. With this handset, Nokia aims to target a market that is budget conscious and has priced the handset competitively in India at Rs. 12,999.

Here's are some more specs for the Nokia Lumia 610 -

  • Display: 3.7-inch LCD display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels
  • 3G, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth wireless technology 2.1 + EDR

Music fiends will be excited with the announcement of these new rhythmic features. Nokia also plans to gives users a lot of Indian music options.

Three-month-old iPhone bursts into flames

Recently, there has been a lot of news about gadgets overheating, and in some extreme cases, even exploding. And the latest in the ever increasing line-up of gadgets exploding is an iPhone owned by a 17-year-old Finn named Henri Helminen. This report comes from9to5Mac, who have sourced the information from Finnish publication SK24.

The report states: “A 17-year-old Finn named Henri Helminen was carrying his iPhone in his back pocket (stick with us here) when it spontaneously started smoking in a big way. We all know Lithium batteries can— if something is wrong— explode or behave like in the video. But, usually there has to be some major malfunction.” Luckily, Helminen suffered no serious injury owing to the explosion.

There is also a video of the event happening as it was captured on CCTV. A report goes on to state, “This is a little too close to Nokia’s headquarters for us to believe off the bat. We will continue to follow the story to see what has happened.”

A similar incident occurred in Ireland a few days ago where a man’s new Samsung Galaxy S III exploded while in the car mount. Explaining the situation, he stated, “I pulled in to look at my phone; the phone burned from the inside out. Burned through the plastic and melted my case to the phone. The phone kept working but without any signal. I brought it to the carphone warehouse and they told me that they couldn’t replace it for me, that they had to send it off to be checked out first. (With) No replacement phone, (I was) left with nothing. The phone was destroyed and it slightly burned a piece of plastic on the inside of my car.”

He went on to add that the store he purchased it from refused to provide him with a replacement and that the phone needed to be sent to Samsung. Since the store did not provide him with a replacement handset, Samsung contacted him and provided him with a replacement Galaxy S III and told him that they would send him some free stuff as well. However, the company did not confirm if it was a fault of the smartphone. Samsung later on issued a statement: “Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question. Once the investigation is complete, we will be able to provide further details on the situation. We are committed to providing our customers with the safest products possible and are looking at this seriously.”

As of now, we do not know the authenticity of this video or if it indeed could be a trick by one of Apple’s rivals. Hopefully, we will get to know more as the story unfolds.
