10 Kickass console style games for the new iPad

Who says you can only play games on consoles or PCs? The new iPad's incredible screen and powerful hardware will have you hooked. Some of the biggest gaming franchises are already available in the App Store, and there are quite a few exclusive action game titles to enjoy on the tablet. Here are some that have successfully made the transition form the console to the tablet.

Rainbow Unit is on the trail of a global terrorist organisation that threatens the world's security and stability. You and your band of elite spies must break into enemy compounds, rescue hostages and utilise each unit member's special skills to complete each of the 11 missions. At your disposal are high-tech weapons and gadgets such as snake cameras that can peer around corners. Order your unit members and direct their actions in real-time. The events of the game unfold much like they do in the original Rainbow 6 novel, but the focus here is on strategy more than flat-out first-person-shooter action.

You play as Leon S. Kennedy, ex-cop and now US agent, and take on the mission to rescue the President’s daughter. While traipsing through an obscure European village, you’ll encounter all kinds of infected, flesh craving human-zombie killers who have pledged their lives to the people responsible for the girls kidnapping. With features that use the tablet’s accelerometer (shake to reload), laser sights for headshots and a choice of weapons, the game provides great graphics with dark hues and smooth game play.

Survive as long as you can with wave after wave of undead enemies coming for your blood. You'll pick up assorted weapons and powerups along the way, but you'll still have a tough time fighting off all the zombies. It's a pretty simple bloodbath scenario, although aiming quickly and accurately is a little difficult with the on-screen controls. You'll get points for each kill, which you can then spend on upgraded weapons that can be found scattered around the levels. There's a four-person multiplayer mode so you can team up with friends too. Killing zombies always makes for a fun time, and this game delivers.

This version of the horror sci-fi third person shooter is an original story that’s been designed specifically for iOS. Although following the traditional game play styling from the console versions of Dead Space, the game proves to be just as scary with it’s low lit corridors and trans-mutated humans chasing you down to slice you to bits. Arsenal still includes weapons from the original console editions, so handling is quite easy once you get used to the controls. The on Screen HUD is also quite engaging when required. The game also offers a couple of play modes that allow you to give dismemberment of appendages a new meaning.

The inmates of Arkham Asylum have escaped and Batman must track them all down. You'll come face to face with The Joker, Two-Face and all their henchmen in a series of battles that play out across Gotham City. You get to upgrade your power, armour and there are plenty of bat-gadgets to help you battle the baddies. You can also choose a Batman costume from several of the past series and movies. Gameplay is fast-paced and you'll need a fair bit of practice to master combat techniques in the beginning. Finally, there's a comic reader with three free stories and hints of future content featuring Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn.

The iconic fighting game has been ported to the iPad to give Apple tablet users the taste of high octane action and one-on-one arcade style combat. Marvel vs Capcom is designed to be a game that both comic book fans and gamers can kick back and enjoy. It brings a slightly old school like visual energy to the tablet and offers players a very console like experience with a great graphics and action packed fighting moves. Play as any member from the X-Men, Iron man or even the Incredible Hulk and take on the likes of Street Fighter characters like Ryu and Chun Li.

Experiments on alien creatures are going horribly wrong and it's up to you to shut down the secret Cerebrus research facility. This game isn't a port of the popular Mass Effect storylines, but you can integrate with Mass Effect 3 and influence your Galactic Readiness Rating. You'll be guided through a number of encounters with the enemy and there's a handy tutorial at the beginning, but there are none of the elaborate roleplaying game elements that defined the original franchise. You still have biotic powers though, and you can upgrade these when you earn points at each checkpoint based on your performance.

Prince of Persia has been a game classic and if you’re a fan, this game will make sure you enjoy every minute of game play on the tablet. Just like the console and other versions, you’ll play the protagonist price who is being hunted down by the Empress of Time. Executing wall runs, jumps from pillars to posts and battling demons is your mission, and you have no choice but to accept it and fight the evil forces of the queen. With a choice of weapons and plenty of enemies to use them on, you can traverse through a variety of environments on the mysterious island in a very console styled game that’s sure to keep you gripped to your iPad.

You're a stranger in America, robbed of the family heirloom you were carrying and left to drown off the coast of Liberty City. You'll have to negotiate the tough criminal underworld and complete a variety of missions in order to restore your family's honor. In the process, you'll wind up stealing hundreds of cars, dealing drugs, crashing all over the place, blowing things up, getting into gang wars, dodging the police and thoroughly enjoying the thrill of it all. The controls are a little finicky while driving, but you get used to them eventually.
Controls will take a little getting used to

Mirror's Edge has a distinctive style and atmosphere, and makes beautiful use of the iPad's touchscreen interface. You're a rebel Runner, undermining a corrupt authoritarian regime which is determined to exterminate you and your friends. Swipe around the screen to jump, dodge, climb and swing around, turning obstacles into mere props. The side-scrolling visuals are crisp and stark, with no distracting controls or indicators on screen at all. The key is to stay moving and build as much momentum as possible, even when under attack. The iPad version introduces a split-screen two-player challenge mode as well.

“At Sennheiser we continuously strive to produce the most natural sound experience and Sennheiser's acoustic team used the HD 700 project as motivation to obtain a cleaner, purer sound in unconventional ways and thus the patent-pending ventilated magnet system was born,”said Kapil Gulati, VP-Sales and Marketing (Consumer Segment) at Sennheiser Electronics India Pvt. Ltd. He added, “The HD 700 is a complete excitement for one’s ears as its warm, balanced and detailed sound turns classical music, jazz, rock or soul into a fascinating listening experience. High-end fans are bound to be delighted by these exciting new premium headphones”.

The company said in an official statement that the ear cups are designed in such a way that the sound waves are directed to the ears at a slight angle resulting in an impressively natural listening experience. The ear cups themselves have a completely open design, which not only ensures a highly transparent sound but also clearly displays the "heart" of these exciting headphones, the 40mm Duofol transducer. Its neodymium magnet systems guarantee detailed, lifelike audio reproduction from 10Hz to 42KHz.

Sennheiser adds that in order to ensure that the acoustic properties of the headphones are not impaired by any partial vibrations, the transducer is mounted in high-precision gauze made of stainless steel. A new patent-pending feature is the special shape of the gauze, which continues the curved lines of the diaphragm. The resulting curvature reduces the volume of air beneath the diaphragm, thus guaranteeing even more precise control of the diaphragm motion and significantly lowering total harmonic distortion.

A puristic shape and the black-and-silver finish give the high-end headphones not only a luxuriously elegant but also a high-tech appearance. The ear cushions made of high-quality microfibre fabric guarantee excellent wearing comfort.

Report claims production of 13-inch MacBook Pro already underway

Ever since Apple announced the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding the fact that Apple is planning a 13-inch model with the same primary feature to add to its portfolio of Retina Display products. Following the rumours and speculations, a recent report by CNET has stated that production for an upcoming notebook from Apple is already underway.

CNET has contacted NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim and he states that production of a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro with a pixel density of 2,560 x 1,600 has already begun. The report quotes Shim as saying, “The supply chain indications are that it's for a MacBook Pro 13.3 -- not a MacBook Air. Displays are being made by Samsung, LGD, and Sharp. The production volume is expected to be substantially higher out of the gate compared to the current 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro. With 15.4 it's production of a few hundred thousand units versus one to two million for the 13.3. That 13.3-inch production began in the third quarter. The volume depends on production yield rates. It depends on how the yield rates turn out. If the yield rates are really good and they're at 70, 80, 90 percent, then they'll probably be in the million and a half range.”

Shim goes on to explain that the major difference between the panels made by Samsung and LGD are the fact that with the case of the iPad, Samsung was able to reach the high resolutions requested by Apple with fewer issues. He goes on to state that they were also the first vendor to get to that volume with the said panel.

In an earlier report, Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI shared with AppleInsider that he expects Apple to ramp up production of a 13-inch next-generation MacBook Pro with Retina Display in September. That would allow the product to hit stores in early October; in time for the holiday shopping season. The track record of the analyst has been good thus far with Kuo predicting that Apple would discontinue its 17-inch MacBook Pro line up. Prior to the launch of the Retina Display MacBook Pro, Kuo also said that Apple would launch a 15-inch version of the same alongside an upgrade to the existing MacBook Pro notebooks. He went on to state that Apple has the "highest hopes" for the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

Kuo said Apple was likely unable to unveil the new product at WWDC this week because of a low yield rate and greater assembly difficulty. Like the next-generation Retina Display MacBook Pro, the 13-inch variety is expected to lack an optical disc drive and rely solely on solid-state flash memory storage. Kuo expects the screen to have a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, and he said the 13-inch model will be slightly thinner than the 15-inch model – at 18 millimeters.

As for the other specifications expected to feature on the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, the brand will use Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics and an Intel Ivy Bridge processor with a clock speed greater than 2GHz.

If you can’t wait for the 13-inch model, the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro is available in India at a starting price of Rs.1,52,900.

Analysis: Apple Vs Samsung patent war verdict

One of the longest and much talked about battles in tech history between arch rivals Apple and Samsung has finally come to an end... sort of. While the rivalry will take its natural course, the result of the legal patent war that has been raging on for the last few months has come in favour of Apple in the U.S., for now. Here’s a quick recap of the events in the case.

As the final verdict so far, the jury stated that Samsung has infringed on Apple’s patents and will have to pay the latter a whopping sum of $1.049 Billion. This verdict has come in favour of Apple as the jury has rejected all of Samsung’s claims. Samsung will not only have to pay Apple for the damages but its various leading devices may also be banned in the U.S. However, Samsung is likely to file an appeal against this decision, and one shouldn't be surprised if the legal limbo continuous. Samsung has said that this isn't the final verdict and ' a loss for the consumer.'

The once-friends-turned-foes went public with the feud last year with a lot of mudslinging over patents and designs. The outcome is a huge setback for the Korean firm as its leading devices have been accused of infringement. While Samsung loses in the U.S., a Seoul court ruled on Friday that though Samsung Electronics' flagship Galaxy smartphone looks very similar to Apple's iPhone, the South Korean firm has not violated the iPhone design. The judge said it was difficult to say that consumers would confuse the iPhone with the Galaxy given the fact they clearly have the respective company logos on the back of each model, and consumers also factor in operating systems, brand, applications, price and services when buying a phone.

Is it a mere coincidence that these two technology titans who are locked in a high-stakes global patent battle have seen positive legal outcomes on their home-grounds?

Samsung devices to bear the brunt
Reportedly, the list of devices that may suffer in the U.S. market over infringement include –Galaxy SGalaxy S II, Nexus S, Mesmerize, Vibrant, Fascinate, Skyrocket, Continuum, Prevail, Infuse, Gem, Mesmerize, Indulge, Replenish, Epic 4G Touch, the Droid Charge smartphones and the Galaxy Tab and Tab 10.1 tablets.

Patent infringement
The patent infringement is going to cost Samsung and its devices quite a bit. Some of these patents that are reportedly infringed by Samsung, as declared in the final verdict, include:
- Patent 381: Bounce Back Scroll functionality which occurs when one scrolls to the end of a list.
- Patent 91:  that includes Pinch to zoom, one finger scroll and zoom navigation. Except for a handful of devices, almost all Samsung handsets and tablets use this feature. Then again, it’s quite standard across the Android platform itself and also features in some other mobile operating systems as well.
- Patent 163: Tap to zoom
- Finally, the jury has found Samsung quite guilty of infringing on Apple’s design patent.
- Some Utility patents were also included.

Apple Vs Samsung: Flashback
Apple and Samsung have been fighting it out for over a year now; the mud slinging and blame game has managed to make quite a few headlines.

It all began in April last year when Apple sued Samsung for copying its product ideas. A 38-page suit filed by Apple in the U.S. District Court of Northern California states that instead of coming up with a totally unique concept for its smartphones and tablets, Samsung chose the convenient path of using Apple’s user interface, look, product design and packaging, among others. Proving its allegations further, Apple publicly showcased the similarities in the iPhone 3GS model, released in June 2009 and Galaxy S i9000 model, released in March 2010. In an answer to Apple’s allegations, Samsung slapped 10 copyright infringements against Apple. The 10 infringements include five patent infringements in South Korea, two in Japan and three in Germany.

Soon after, the Samsung-Apple tug of war over design started making news. Apple accused Samsung of copying the design of its products. The iPad maker even asked for permission to view the designs of Samsung’s yet-to-be-released products to ascertain the safety of the designs of its own products. Samsung, in a bid to balance both sides, asked Apple to show them the designs of its yet-to-be-released products, i.e., the next version of the iPhone and the iPad. However, Samsung was denied permission to peek into Apple’s stash of prototypes. The judgment further added that Samsung’s open ways of proceeding with product releases didn’t quite fit its claims of product secrecy. This in contrast with Apple’s well guarded trade secrets gave Samsung the final setback.

After Apple’s small victory of not allowing Samsung to peek into its products, the latter reportedly asked for import ban of Apple products in the U.S. On the other hand, Apple asked for a ban on the sale of the Galaxy S. As per the request forwarded to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Apple asked for a ban on Samsung’s Galaxy S 4G, Infuse 4G, Droid Charge smartphones and also the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

In the following months, the Apple-Samsung battle intensified further. The Apple Samsung saga moved to Australia wherein Apple stopped ads and the sale of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the continent. Samsung had been very keen on launching its coveted Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia and had been making announcements for the same. The Australian court delivered its verdict on the ongoing Apple - Samsung tussle in the country in favour of the Cupertino-based Apple. The decision meant that a temporary ban on the sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia will be levied.

Samsung was soon reported to be guilty by the Dutch court for infringing on one of Apple's patents pertaining to the Gallery app on its smartphones. The ruling stated that with effect from October 13, 2011, a ban will be imposed on the sale of the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy S II andGalaxy Ace smartphones unless Samsung does something to fix the issue. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was free to roam Europe, save Germany.

Soon Samsung counter-sued Apple in Germany. It even offered to tweak the Tab 10.1 to begin sales in Australia. However, after securing a block on the latest Galaxy tablets in Germany, Apple even rejected Samsung’s offer to end the tablet battle in Australia. While Apple got the Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned in Germany, reports about Samsung seeking a ban on iPhone and iPads on its home turf, Korea, started surfacing.

After reports about the ban of Samsung products in EU, Australia and Korea, the iPad manufacturer headed to Japan. Apple reportedly approached the Tokyo District Court with an appeal in the form of a lawsuit to have several of rival Samsung's key products banned in the country. Apple wants the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, as well as its Galaxy Tab 7 banned from sale in Japan.

In the U.S. judgment, the judge said Samsung's Galaxy tablets do infringe Apple's iPad patents, but also said Apple might have a problem establishing the validity of its patents. The comments from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh came in a court hearing in San Jose, California. Lucy Koh later discarded Apple’s claims over Samsung misinterpreting the license over certain patents.

Samsung redesigned the Galaxy Tab to avoid ban in Germany and also got the temporary ban lifted from Australia. Apple soon said that the reworked tablet is still a copy of the iPad. In fact, Apple also listed out some alternate designs for Samsung smartphones and tablets. Here are some ideas listed. The battle got sour and personal which was clearly seen in the productadvertisements. Earlier this year, Apple accused Samsung of infringing on its 'slide-to-unlock' patent in the Galaxy Nexus. Apple also started pushing for the Galaxy Nexus ban in the U.S. TheSamsung Galaxy S III, reportedly one of Samsung’s most powerful smartphones which received accolades from its users, also faced heat from Apple for infringement of patents.

The US judge sent Apple and Samsung to go make peace and settle the matter. A court filing earlier this year stated that the respective heads of these technology giants would try to come to terms and forge a settlement. Apple and Samsung CEOs headed to a court-ordered play date and met for over two days in San Francisco, but the talks that lasted 2 days - nine and seven hours, respectively, failed to elicit any decision.

This week, both the companies made their final pitches to the U.S. jury. Apple spent four years pouring resources into developing the iconic iPhone, while Samsung couldn't keep up and eventually decided to copy its major competitor, an Apple attorney said in court. Apple attorney Harold McElhinny urged jurors to consider the testimony of a Korean designer who said she worked day and night on Samsung's phones for three months. Finally, after much deliberation, Apple emerged victorious.

From the beginning, legal experts and Wall Street analysts viewed Samsung as the underdog in the case. Apple's headquarters are a mere 10 miles from the San Jose courthouse and jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley where Jobs is a revered technological pioneer. While the legal and technological issues were complex, patent expert Alexander I. Poltorak had previously said the case would likely boil down to whether jurors believed Samsung's products look and feel almost identical to Apple's iPhone and iPad. However, as Samsung claims, this isnt the final verdict, so lets wait and watch.

Cook's email to employees after Apple win leaks online

It is clearly the biggest news of the day, an end of sorts to one longstanding patent battle between two technology heavyweights - Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics. Apple won after what has been one long battle and Samsung Electronics is to cough up compensation to the tune of a staggering $1.05 billion. It is a big win for the company, and on the Internet is circulating a copy of the email that Apple chief, Tim Cook sent out to his employees. Incidentally, Cook also completes his one year on the job today. In the e-mail that Cook sent out to his employees after the big win, he wrote how that lawsuit has been about values, more importantly than patents or money. He adds that the lawsuit came into being only after repeatedly asking Samsung to stop copying Apple's work.
Battleground: Japan
Apple wins longstanding patent battle against Samsung

The e-mail, as displayed on 9to5Mac, reads,

"Today was an important day for Apple and for innovators everywhere.

Many of you have been closely following the trial against Samsung in San Jose for the past few weeks. We chose legal action very reluctantly and only after repeatedly asking Samsung to stop copying our work. For us this lawsuit has always been about something much more important than patents or money. It’s about values. We value originality and innovation and pour our lives into making the best products on earth. And we do this to delight our customers, not for competitors to flagrantly copy.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the jury who invested their time in listening to our story. We were thrilled to finally have the opportunity to tell it. The mountain of evidence presented during the trial showed that Samsung’s copying went far deeper than we knew.

The jury has now spoken. We applaud them for finding Samsung’s behavior willful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn’t right.

I am very proud of the work that each of you do.

Today, values have won and I hope the whole world listens.

Tim"

In a decision that the jury came up with on Friday, it had been asserted that Samsung infringed on Apple's technologies which it used to create its iPhone and iPad. Samsung, however, is expected to appeal on the decision. In what would also come as a blow to Samsung's ambitions in the U.S., Apple has also demanded in its appeal that Samsung withdraw its most popular smartphones and tablets from the U.S. market.

Apple and Samsung were friends once and share a complex relationship as Samsung is a key components supplier to Apple. Only recently was it reported that a British judge in his ruling affirmed that Samsung's Galaxy tablets did not infringe Apple's designs for the iPad, because they were "not as cool". It was Judge Colin Birss, who noted in his High Court judgment that the Galaxy tablets were part of the 'same same family as the Apple design' when seen from the front. However, Samsung products, he noted, were "very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back".

The chief executives of the two companies also met recently in what essentially had been a court-directed mediation. The court-directed mediation at the time was being perceived as an attempt to help the companies iron out all their differences and was to be overseen by U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero.

Apple to produce 4 million 7.85-inch iPads by September

The Internet is running rife with rumours surrounding the next iPad. Joining in on the bandwagon is Digitimes and it has recently reported that Apple’s manufacturing partners will start to roll out 4 million units of the 7.85-inch tablet per month beginning this September.

The report states, “Supply volume of Apple's 7.85-inch iPad is estimated to reach four million units per month starting in September in order to prepare for demand from year-end holidays, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. Rumors are circulating in the IT market that Apple will launch its 7.85-inch iPad in October with a thinner screen frame to allow the device to feature a bigger display area than other competing products and will also feature a resolution similar to that of iPad 2.”

The report further states that sources claim that the supply chain had already begun production of the tablet since June at a volume of around several hundred thousand per month.

iPad Mini launch is near...

The report ends by stating that their sources have implied that the pricing of this smaller tablet would be at $299, i.e. more than that of its rivals, the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus 7. They state that though this is the case, the specs table from Apple would still definitely be able to give them competition.

If Apple is indeed currently mass producing the 7.85-inch iPad, this could indicate that the launch is near. Earlier this year, there had been reports doing the rounds indicating that Apple was testing a tablet with a smaller display, but hadn't decided yet whether to proceed with the production.

It may be really interesting to see if Apple does launch an iPad with a lower budget, as the brand has lost a significant amount of market share to 7-inch tablets. The main competitor is the Amazon Kindle Fire, which has eaten quite a bit of Apple’s share in the tablet market, in comparison to other tablets.

As for the launch of this smaller iPad, there have been various rumours indicating that Apple would unveil it at the time it announces the next generation iPhone aka the iPhone 5. However, a journalist who has close connections with Apple has refuted this possibility. And as per a report byApple Insider, John Grubber, in a post titled ‘Sharing the Stage’ stated, “I’m thinking it makes more sense for Apple to hold two events. First, an iPhone event, focused solely on the new iPhone and iOS 6. Then, the iPhone ships nine days later, and there’s another wave of iPhone-focused attention as the reviews come out. Then, in the first or second week of October, Apple holds its traditional “music event”, exactly along the lines of the events at which they’ve been debuting new iPods for the last decade.”

Those users purchasing a qualifying Windows 7 PC between June 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013 can go in for the registration by paying Rs.699.

Users can redeem the promotion code that they receive during the upgrade ordering process to avail the promotional price.

Users can purchase a downloadable version of Windows 8 Pro. For an additional fee plus shipping and any applicable taxes or duties, they can even go in for an optional installation DVD.

Those who have purchased a PC prior to the offer duration can also register for the upgrade, but for a higher cost - approximately Rs.2,200.

Earlier in July this year, we had reported about Microsoft offering Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 as part of a promotional scheme. This offer is up for grabs up to the 31st of January, 2013 and will be available in 131 markets. Not only users with Windows 7 are eligible for this offer, but it is also valid for users who have Windows Vista and XP. Microsoft has not just stopped there; they have also stated that users can even add Windows Media Center for free through the “add features” option within Windows 8 Pro after the upgrade procedure.

In was in June this year that we had reported about Microsoft announcing its Windows 8 upgrade offer for Windows 7 PC users in India at a price of Rs.699. At the time, however, the registrations had not begun and the below link informed users that it would be made available in the near future. At the time, Tami Reller, Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Windows at Microsoft said, "We’ve seen a great interest in Windows 8, especially given the availability of the Windows 8 Release Preview this week, and yet we know many consumers want a new PC now. The Windows Upgrade Offer gives people the flexibility to purchase the new Windows PC they need today, with the knowledge they can easily upgrade to Windows 8 when it’s available."
