Foxconn chairman pledges to keep raising pay

Foxconn Technology Group will keep increasing worker salaries in China and cutting work hours, Chairman Terry Gou said on Sunday, after it came under fire for poor working conditions for employees making Apple iPhones and iPads. Apple and Foxconn agreed last week to tackle violations of conditions among the 1.2 million workers assembling iPhones and iPads in a landmark decision that could change the way Western companies do business in China.

Better days here?

"We are a saying now in the company -- you work fewer hours, but get more pay," Gou told Reuters at the 2012 Boao Forum for Asia in China's Hainan island province. "We won't stop here and will continue to increase salaries." According to the agreement reached with Apple, Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, whose subsidiary Hon Hai Precision Industry assembles Apple devices in factories in China, will hire tens of thousands of new workers, eliminate illegal overtime, improve safety protocols and upgrade housing and other amenities.

The move is in response to the independent Fair Labor Association's findings of violations of labour law by Foxconn, such as letting long work hours and unpaid overtime. Foxconn now supplies 50 percent of the world's consumer electronics. Global firms, such as Apple and Nike Inc , have been criticised for the labour conditions at China factories that make their products, with analysts and labour association calling them sweat shops due to low wages and tough working conditions.

Huawei Honor gets Indian price tag, coming soon

Huawei’s latest smartphone, the Honor is coming soon to an online store near you. This Gingerbread running smartphone has been put up on online store Flipkart and though the website currently shows that the smartphone's out of stock, we reckon it should start shipping sometime next week onwards. The site has priced the Huawei Honor at Rs.19,990.

In case you’ve forgotten, here’s a reminder on what the spec sheet for this smartphone looks like.
  • 4.0-inch FWVGA capacitive touchscreen with a 480 x 854 pixel resolution
  • 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor with an Adreno 205 GPU
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 1GB internal storage
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot, DLNA
  • GPS with A-GPS support and Google Maps
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, EDR, microUSB v2.0
  • 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, 720p video recording
  • 0.3 megapixel front camera
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Memory expandable up to 32GB via microSD card
  • 3.5 mm handsfree socket
  • 1900 mAh Lithium – ion battery

In terms of media and connectivity, you pretty much get everything with the Huawei Honor and while only a full review can give us the actual picture, the 1900 mAh Lithium – ion battery may mean that’s its got the potential to outlast the other smartphones in the same price bracket. For example, the Neo V has a 1500 mAh battery, the Optimus Black and even the Xperia Pro have a 1500 mAh battery.

The other phones falling within a similar price bracket, include the LG Optimus Blackthe Xperia Active and the Xperia Pro. There’s also the Atrix 2 for close to 22K, but it’s a dual core smartphone. For close to a grand cheaper you also have the following set of smartphones – the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V, the Galaxy S LCD and the Xperia Ray. As we can see, the Huawei Honor has a pretty big competition to fight it out against. The Xperia Neo V in particular has become more of a crowd favourite and the main difference between the two phones is that the Neo V comes with a 3.7-inch screen, as opposed to the 4-inch one of the Honor.

More Apple Premium Resellers to come to India

Early this year, reports about Apple's plans to officially start their own retail stores in India, on the lines of the brand's other stores in countries across the globe, such as in the U.S, the UK, Germany, France, China and Japan began doing rounds. Apple presently sells their products through official Apple resellers, like Imagine and the iStore, which is owned by Reliance Digital. The brand, however, does not have a solely owned store in the country. Reports regarding Apple launching their own store in the country started when an unnamed official revealed that Apple Inc. may open their own shops following the Indian government's nod to the ownership of single-brand retail stores by foreign companies. The official went on to state that the iPhone, iPad maker has been in discussion with the department from sometime, now and is keen to re-enter the Indian market after an earlier bid to do so in 2006.
Could we see something like this in India?
Apple to build up on their number of resellers in India

However, during Apple’s quarter earning call, Apple CEO, Tim Cook had shot down these reportsby stating that although India was a growing market, it is still a small one, at the moment. Hence, as of now they do not have plans in place to start a retail store in India. Though this may still be the case, according to a report by Macrumors who have come across a job listing from Apple it appears that the Cupertino brand is pushing for a major growth plan for their Apple Premium Resellers (APR) in India and in the process aiming to hire a National Manager.

The job description reads, “The Apple Premium Reseller (APR) program was designed by Apple to expand and improve the market coverage and customer experience. Apple Premium Resellers offer the complete range of Macs, iPods and iPhones, along with a full complement of software and accessories. There are currently 49 APRs in India with a significant growth plan for the future. The NM will lead the expansion of the APR coverage as per plan.
