Apple's now looking at Galaxy Nexus ban in U.S

If the reports coming in are anything to go by, then Apple has removed its sights from Germany, for now at least and is gearing up for some action back home. Now, according to reports it is confirmed that Apple is looking at getting the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone, which is the first phone to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich banned in the U.S and it has filed a preliminary injunction to that effect in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California.

Something BIG is unveiled!

Apple is now accusing Samsung of violating on 4 new patents, which Foss Patents in a post equals to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The four patents, in question, include a data tapping patent, a patent related to Siri, a slide-to-unlock patent and a word completion patent. Further, the post states that there is more to just this injunction than what meets the eye. Apparently, this preliminary injunction was filed alongside a federal lawsuit; and in all likelihood the existing set of patents may be a part of a larger group. Apple's now seeking a sales ban on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone in the United States.

Clearly, Apple's in no mood to lie dormant, especially after its rather bitter defeat in Germany, wherein the state court in Düsseldorf gave the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a go-ahead. According to the post, Apple is looking more closely at technical patents, than design-related ones, and hence this should particularly be one to look out for. The post further throws light on the specifics of the preliminary injuction stating that, "A preliminary injunction would not prohibit the sale of a Galaxy Nexus just because it's called Galaxy Nexus or looks like one: it's all about which patents it infringes on. Theoretically, Google could remove the functionality protected by any of these patents in order to keep the product on sale, but if it changes the program code of a lead device, this would make it particularly clear to everyone else in the market that there's an infringement issue."

Five latest Ultrabooks to hit the Indian market

The notebook market has seen waves of development in the past few years with the netbook phenomenon. Now, it appears that the time for Ultrabooks has arrived. Netbooks were all about impressive battery life, decent amount of performance and very affordable pricing. Ultrabooks are aimed at being affordable, too, offer good battery life as well as very good performance, but all at a $1000 price point - at least, that’s what Intel is aiming for.

Ultrabooks are supposed to be slim and light-weight - very much like an Apple MacBook Air. Now, if you want one in India, it’s not like every brand has a couple of them. A few of them have just started entering the market and we’ve compiled a list of them for you to choose from.

Samsung's new Series 5 line of Ultra Notebooks

The Samsung Series Ultra Notebooks (or Ultrabooks as Intel likes to call them) are the latest to be launched and are powered by Core i5 processors. In fact, these were launched a few days back. The Ultrabooks are available in 13 and 14-inch models,, which means they’re very portable. The unique feature of the 14-inch model is the integrated DVD drive and memory card. Samsung claims this to be one of a kind, because of the space constraints - no manufacturer integrated an optical drive in their Ultrabooks. This was also the case with netbooks.

The larger 14-inch model comes with a 1TB drive, while the 13-inch one sells with a 500GB drive. Of course, users have the option of choosing SSDs over hard drives on the 13-inch model - for this reason, there are 128GB and 256GB  options available. Users who go in for the 14-inch model can also opt for a Radeon HD7550M, part of the new Radeon HD7000 series of GPUs. The 13-inch model with all the features and components fit in weighs around 1.42kg, while the fully spec’d 14-inch model weighs around 1.84 kg. The standard models of the 13-inch and 14-inch Series 5 Ultra Notebooks sell for Rs. 48,990 and Rs. 54,390 respectively

One of the other recent launches was Wipro e.go Ultra - an Ultrabook from the Indian PC manufacturer. The e.go Ultra has a 14-inch display like most of the Ultrabooks being sold these days. It’s also got the Intel Core i line of processors, 4GB of memory and 500GB of hard drive space onboard them. Windows 7 is a standard feature for the new Aero Ultrabook. Pricing is a sensitive thing for the Indian market, and Wipro is selling the Aero e.go Ultra between Rs.39,000 and Rs.49,000.

HP is  one of the world’s largest PC manufacturers and they’ve decided to launched their first ever Ultrabook - the Folio,  in India. The 13.3-inch Folio weighs only 1.5 kg. in comparison to some of the other larger Ultrabooks in the market. It packs a punch with its Intel Sandy Bridge processor and its 128GB SSD ensures that temperatures, power consumption, size and vibrations are kept low.

Most of the other features are standard. For example, there’s an HD webcam and USB 3.0 support for faster data transfer speeds, assuming you use USB 3.0 drives. The HP Folio also comes with Windows 7 Professional and there’s a 3-year warranty available as an optional feature. Another option is a TPM chip that HP claims can secure emails and information. The HP Folio starts at a price of Rs.69,990, higher than some of the other notebooks in the market.

Bright and colourful - the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s

The Lenovo IdeaPad U300s was one of the Ultrabooks to be launched towards the end of last year.  We reviewed it in December 2011 and we found it to be a pretty decent piece of hardware. Priced at a little more than Rs.61,000 in the market, it performs well in most CPU benchmarks, thanks to its Core i5 2467M processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Storage is handled by the 128GB SSD and it has Windows 7 Home Premium running on it.

This 13.3-inch display U300s is very light with a weight of just 1.36 kg and a thickness of just 14.9mm.  The keys on the keyboard have the isolated design that offer a decent elegant look to the Ultrabook. There’s no wired Ethernet port so that could be a problem. The laptop lasts 5 hrs and 30 minutes on a full charge, but with very intensive workloads, this could drop to close to 3 hours.

The slightly expensive option - the Zenbook from ASUS

The 13.3-inch Zenbook from popular PC component manufacturer ASUS is one of the costlier Ultrabooks around. Priced at Rs.89,999 during its launch late last year, it offers most of the features as the other Ultrabooks. It weighs a mere 1.3 kg for the 13.3-inch model that has a 1600x900 display. For this price, you get a 256GB SSD on the Ultrabook and a standard Intel HD3000 integrated graphics solution. There’s 4GB of RAM and a rather powerful Core i7 2677M processor, that’s clocked at 1800 MHz at stock but shoots up to 2.9 GHz with TurboBoost enabled. The key feature that ASUS is proud of is the Bang & Olufsen ICEPower speakers.

So, there you have it - a list of some of the latest Ultrabooks to hit the market. In the past two weeks, we’ve seen some two major releases, and with Intel developing its future platform to align with Ultrabooks, one can be rest assured there won’t be a shortage of Ultrabooks in the market, this year.

Apple reportedly working on two new chipsets

With all eyes turned towards Europe and more specifically at the Mobile World Congress being held at Barcelona, a few eyes are still looking at the on-goings that are taking place in the Apple camp. The brand is expected to launch the next generation of the iPad on the 7th of March and the Internet is rife with rumours and speculations as to what the new tablet will possess. There had been indications in the past stating that the brand is readying to launch the iPad 3 with a quad-core A6 chipset. However, these suggestions were quickly rebuffed by stating that the brand will launch an A5X chipset, instead. Previous reports also showed a picture of the logic board of what is believed to be the iPad 3’s logic board and this shows the A5X chip. As per a new report by 9to5Mac, Apple is in fact actually working on both chipsets – the A6 as well as the A5X.

Both chips pictured

A report in the past showed the naming process in which Apple names their chipsets. As reported previously, “An "A5X" is a step-wise upgrade to the A5 corresponds with progression of processor part numbers. The A4 was known to be the S5L8930X, the A5 as the S5L8940X and the new iPad processor as S5L8945X.” The report by 9to5Mac goes on to say that taking this into consideration, an A6 processor would feature the name S5L8950X. They indicate, “Deep in the iOS 5.1 betas sits references to two next-generation iOS device chips: the previously discussed S5L8945X and this new S5L8950X. While nobody found the 50X (A6) chip in the code until now, we can report that both next-generation processors entered the iOS code simultaneously. This would seem to indicate Apple is working on two next-generation chips.

There is no indication on what these two chipsets will be used in, but taking a guess, the A6 chip would feature on the iPad 3, while the A5X may feature in a newer version of the iPad 2. There could also be the launch of a smaller iPad that could feature the A5X chipset, as recent reports indicate that Apple may, in fact be working on a 7 or 8-inch iPad. Upcoming BlackBerrry Curve 9320 spotted in India

Late in January, a leaked roadmap from BlackBerry surfaced displaying a range of handsets that are scheduled to be launched, this year. In the document, a handset, which went by the name, BlackBerry Curve 9320 had also featured in the list. This handset is scheduled to make its debut, during the second quarter of 2012. At the time, however, there was nothing to visually please us and there was just the name to go by. As per an exclusive report by BGR.in, the website has got their hands on the product and have shared some images and insights on what to expect from the upcoming BlackBerry smartphone.

Is just the right size

The author states that the 9320 has the right size, without it being either too large, or too small and the plastic used feels sturdy, in comparison to the high-end smartphones from Samsung. He notes that most likely there would be no difference between the upcoming Curve 9220 and this model, when it comes to the look and feel of the devices; the only difference lies in the fact that the Curve 9320 features a different camera and 3G capability. An interesting feature of this smartphone is that it has a BBM button on the side, which acts as a shortcut for accessing the hugely popular instant messaging client. Research in Motion may launch this smartphone with some free BBM plans when these devices hit the stores in India. Apart from this he says that it will be running on BlackBerry OS 7.1, which features deeper BBM integration in respect to third party applications. The author’s source has informed him that on a 2G network this handset lasted a day and this included long duration calls, as well. The handset also supposedly comes with FM capabilities; however the author could not confirm the same.

Here is a quick glance at the specifications of the BlackBerry Curve 9320

  • BlackBerry OS 7.1
  • 2.44-inch qVGA display with a resolution of 320 x 240
  • 3.2MP camera with flash, Image stabilization and video recording capabilities
  • 512 MB eMMC, 512 MB RAM
  • MicroSD card support up to 32GB
  • Wi-Fi 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n
  • GPS, Bluetooth, FM radio
  • Accelerometer, Proximity Sensors, Digital Compass (Magnetometer)

The website concludes by stating, “Considering that the Curve 9220 is expected to be priced around Rs 9,000, we would like to believe its 3G variant is most likely to be priced under Rs 12,000.

Samsung Galaxy S II getting Android 4.0 (ICS) on March 15

The wait seems to be finally getting over for all Samsung Galaxy S II owners, as very soon, well, next week in fact, you’ll be receiving the coveted Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich update. Samsung will probably be rolling this update out in phases and so in case you don’t get a prompt a few days after March 15, don’t worry as you can always update it manually via Odin, once the official ROMs are out. If you don’t want to go through that hassle, then I guess you just have to wait it out.

Stable ROM on Galaxy S II

The news comes from a Samsung importer in Israel, called Sunny Communications. They revealed this little piece of information on their Facebook page that the update will be releasing on March 15. Since the post is in Hebrew, here’s the quote from their Facebook page, “We promised that we're working on it. You waited patiently. On 15 March it comes: the Android version 4, ICS, tens of thousands of the devices purchased GALAXY SII cellular companies in the country or directly from us. We here are very excited for the launch, hope you :)”

While we don’t know much about the final ROM, since Samsung refused to demo any ICS products at MWC, we’ll just have to wait and watch. But if it is anything like the leaked ROM we saw towards the end of last year, then visually at least, you won’t be able to tell any difference. ICS will be heavily skinned with TouchWiz barely leaving any traces of the new Operating System. While some may not find a problem with this, many of us are not too happy, since ICS, by itself has a beautiful interface, so there’s isn’t any need for heavy skinning like it was on Gingerbread and Froyo.

Almost every other company will be either bringing out a new skin or leaving well enough alone. Take HTC for example, the Sense 4.0 isn’t too graphically rich, as compared to their current versions, while many like ZTE and Acer haven’t really bothered much with skinning the phone, at all. Samsung are sticking with TouchWiz and unfortunately, it’s going to be the same look like the existing one.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

The PlayStation Vita may not have the best software lineup on the planet but it does have a solid contender in the form of Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Like its console brethren, it’s Sony’s perfect first party launch vehicle to showcase not only the graphical prowess of the Vita but other functions such as touch-screen and motion controlled gaming.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss isn’t a port of any of the older Uncharted games; it is in fact a stand-alone entry in this series. Nathan Drake as usual finds himself in the midst of beautiful yet mysterious women, age old mysteries, backstabbing companions, tons of bad dudes and of course, his mentor Sully. It’s the video game equivalent of a summer blockbuster and Golden Abyss nails down the pacing near perfectly as players are introduced to a diverse gamut of gameplay mechanics such as platforming, puzzle solving and of course, combat.

Fans of the series and Uncharted veterans will feel right at home with Golden Abyss. You’ll climb stuff, unlock puzzles to open ancient crypts, unravel hundred year old secrets and shoot armies of grunts using the game’s rather responsive gunplay mechanics. I was a bit apprehensive as to how combat would play out in this game but thanks to the Vita’s dual analogue stick, it’s the next best thing to your PlayStation 3 controller. Of course, it cannot offer the same accuracy as the PS3 controller but it comes damn close, an impressive feat considering a solid control scheme has always been the bane of portable gaming.

New to the Golden Abyss are a bunch of gameplay mechanics never seen before in an Uncharted game that somehow feel very natural to the entire experience. Of course none of these would have been possible on the PS3 due to the lack of any touch screen surface. At first mechanics like dusting the dirt off an old relic, cracking a safe or charcoal rubbing across white paper may feel a tad gimmicky but they’ve been implemented so well into the game, it feels very organic. There’s even a neat jigsaw puzzle inspired mini-game where you’ll have to arrange torn pieces of paper to decipher their meaning. Cool stuff. On the flip side, swiping your screen to open doors felt a bit forced and unnecessary.

The Uncharted series is well known for its cinematic set-pieces and Golden Abyss does hold its own very well considering its graphical limitations. In fact it does not really look like a handheld game. Developer Bend Studio have pulled out all stops in making Golden Abyss one of the most visually appealing games on the Vita right now. Character models are well detailed, environments are dripping with detail, texture work is solid and lighting is particularly impressive. The only aspect of presentation I didn’t care for was the lack of environmental diversity. There’s just jungle, jungle and more jungle. Considering previous PS3 games made players travel all over the globe, something besides a jungle setting would have been appreciated.

Besides stellar presentation and solid action, story is another crucial element of this series. It may be cheesy and predictable but it’s brought to life by solid voice actors who at this point in time seem very comfortable with their roles. In fact I was so engrossed in the story and chemistry shared between pivotal characters, I was never really bothered by the constant barrage of cut-scenes. In some games this may have felt like overkill but hearing Drake and Sully crack "That’s what she said" jokes made it all worth it. Steve Carell would have been proud.

To me, the worst part of Golden Abyss is its price. At Rs. 2799, it is without a doubt a very expensive investment, one that does not even offer multiplayer by the way. The game can be replayed a few times if you’re the collecting kind but I doubt many of you will head back into the campaign immediately just to collect all the in-game treasures. That being said, it is still a very well made game that packs in an entertaining (and fairly lenghty) campaign with all the terrific presentation values you've come to expect from the series. It's even more impressive that it does all this effortlessly on a hand-held console. If you do pick up PS Vita at launch, Golden Abyss is a no-brainer

Apple launches updated 3rd gen Apple TV

At an event held in San Francisco, Apple head honcho, Tim Cook announced an all new Apple TV device. It was one of the few products being showcased, including the key product - iPad. The Apple TV has seen fair success in the past and Apple is continuing to develop it further. This new version would be the third variation of the original Apple TV. A few visuals of the product and the interface were shown off at the event. The interface seems to have been influenced by the other iOS designs. There’s clear presence of large icons and cover when it comes to music and movies. Eddy Cue, Senior VP, Internet Software and Services was the one who showed off the device.

The new, third-generation Apple TV

While the presentation was very brief, Eddy highlighted a few features of the new device. The new version also includes the Genius feature found for music, movies. While there’s no official date on when the Apple TV will be launched in Indian markets yet, the product is said to launch on the 16th of March for $99 (roughly Rs.5,000)

Apple officially unveils the 'new iPad'

Apple does have the rumor mills work overtime, and the wait for its next generation of iPad – the new iPad (or the new iPad3/iPad HD) was no different. Yes, the Cupertino-based company has officially launched its next and the third version of the iPad. Cook began talking about the post PC devices and how iPad has successfully created a separate device category, altogether, before he began pitching in “the new iPad” that weighs 1.4lbs and is 9.4mm thin. We only wonder what's with the 'new name' Apple choose for its next generation iPad.

The next gen iPad as expected, employs a 9.7-inch Retina Display with high resolution of 2048 x 1536 and around 44 percent more colour saturation. It delivers four times the pixels, compared to the iPad 2, and the 3.1 million pixels in the Retina display are more than one million more pixels than an HDTV. It is fuelled by the powerful A5X dual core processor with quad-core graphics designed for swifter performance and responsive user experience to support the Retina display. It offers twice the performance, compared to A5 chip, while maintaining the power efficiency.

The new iPad, Yes that's what it's called

After camera-less original iPad, the company has shown room for improvements and gladly the iPad 3 features the 5 megapixel iSight camera with support for 1080p video recording. It comes with 5-element lens and IR filter. The new iPad will bring in voice dictation, giving everyone the taste of Siri. As expected, it also supports 4G LTE, it now supports 21Mbps HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA at 42Mbps, with LTE at 73Mbps (Verizon, Rogers, Bell, Telus and AT&T will be the LTE partners). The battery life is maintained 10 hours, while 9 hours on 4G.

The iPad Wi-Fi + 4G comes with built-in next generation 4G LTE that supports faster networks for HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA, and both CDMA and GSM iPad users can reap the benefits. Personal Hotspot can be used to share the fast network connection on your iPad with up to 5 other devices using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB. On typing the microphone icon on the keyboard, iPad listens to you and converts it into text.  This can be used to write messages, take notes, search the web and more. It works with third-party apps and capable of updating Facebook status, tweeting, or writing Instagram captions.

The new iPad also brings in the latest update to the OS as the iOS 5.1. Chris Cheung from Autodesk showcased the new SketchBook Pro, a drawling app that focuses on art line for artists, exclusively available for iOS from April. Mike Capps, President of Epic Games launched Infinity Blade: Dungeons. Randy Ubillos, Chief Architect for Photo and Video apps talks about reinvention of iPhoto with new gestures, new effects, multi-touch editing, and you can beam photos directly between devices. There’s a new bezel gesture, too. Other elements to be updated are iWork and GarageBand.

A quick look at the highlights of the new iPad:
  • A5X chip with quad-core graphics
  • 9.7" Retina display with 3.1 million pixels
  • 5 megapixel iSight camera
  • 1080p video support
  • 4G+LTE
  • iOS 5.1 operating system

The new iPad has been dipped in shades of Black and White and will be made available starting March 16. It is now available for pre-order for select countries - Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the U.S Virgin Islands. The end of March will see the device reach another batch of countries, like New Zealand, Greece, Hungary, to name a few. Obviously, you won't see India making it to any of these lists, but going by the latest trend, we shouldn't have to wait too long, till the dainty devices reach our shores. The 16GB iPad is priced at $499 (approx Rs.25,092), 32GB at $599(approx Rs.30,120) and $699 (approx Rs. 35,150) for 64GB. For 4G services, the prices are $629 (approx Rs. 31,630), $729 (approx rs. 36,652) and $829 (approx Rs. 41,679), respectively. Obviously, one needs to keep in mind, when the new tablets hit the Indian markets, prices are bound to be on the higher side of the approximate rates mentioned above.

With the launch of the new iPad, the iPad 2 is made available at an affordable price of Rs. 24,500 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and Rs. 32,900 for the 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G model.

Sun Center Studios Goes Solar

Sun Center Studios is a television and movie studio outside Philadelphia, PA. They have recently added or are planning to add a whole bunch of solar energy collectorsto their premises. This will save energy and help eliminate The United State’s dependence on oil from hostile regimes. Movie studios are huge and pretty amazing. Produces have huge budgets. If you want to make your own movies or webisodes, then perhaps you should get your own video camera. The Sony HDR-XR160 High Definition Camcordercould be the sort of camera that could help you produce the sort of movie or show that you want to. Ultimately, one should probably do their own product research to find out what will best fit their own specific needs. Movie and television studios are huge, but individuals where they live can probably also make some pretty amazing short movies or shows for mass consumption on a small shoe-string budget. :)

Nokia pure The Phone With 41 Megapixel Camera!!

Nokia 808 PureView Hands-on Review
Alright, so here it is, probably the last (or one of the very last) Symbian smartphones ever – the Nokia 808 PureView. And boy is this an epic way for Symbian to exit the industry!

What do we mean here? Well, first of all, the Nokia 808 PureView comes to succeed the N8 – the smartphone that kind of set the new benchmark for camera phones when it came out. Well, interestingly, the still largest handset manufacturer by volume seems to be aiming even higher this time by introducing a handset with a camera which has not 12, not 16... but an enormous 41 megapixels! Sounds pretty wicked, we know.

First of all, we s
hould note that the handset looks like a typical Nokia, which isn't a bad thing, of course. It has a large 4" screen on the front, however, it still has Symbian's usual nHD resolution, which is 360x640 pixels. The display uses the AMOLED technology, and overall it looks cool, despite the relatively low resolution. Touch sensitivity is also pretty good.

Do not expect wonders from this device on the build quality front. Is's actually quite light, and doesn't feel as premium as the N8. Still, it's not bad either.

As we said, this is one of the last Symbian smartphones, and the exact version running on it is Belle. To tell you the truth, we feel that Nokia has made some pretty good advancements in the way of the UI with these latest Symbian iterations, so it's kind of sad to know that its lifetime is coming to an end. Overall, the software runs great, it's very fluid, although we can't really say that it's as streamlined as it should be yet.

Since this is mainly a camera-centric handset, Nokia has put some effort into improving the camera application. Indeed, we were fascinated to find how simple to use it was. All of the options are easily accessible on the left side of the screen, without unnecessary taking too much space.

The Nokia 808 PureView's 41MP camera can actually shoot still at a maximum of 38MP resolution. Theaperture is set at f/2.4, while a Xenon flash is there to assist you while shooting in low-light conditions. In addition, there's an LED light to help the handset focus better. Probably the coolest thing about this high-resolution sensor, is that when you shoot in a standard 8MP or 5MP mode, you can actually zoom in without loosing much quality. And for those worrying about the size of these giant pics- the guys from Nokia said that the 808 PureView is doing a lot to compress the pics so a giant 38MP image, for example, shouldn't take more than 12MB, which does sound like a lot of compression. Here's for hoping this won't be at the expense of the quality

As far as video recording is concerned, you can shoot with a maximum of 1080p resolution, 30fps. Again, thanks to the giant sensor, this new Nokia allows you to zoom in up to 4 times without loosing quality. Sounds great to us!

Obviously, we have a new king on the camera phone scene on its way. When is it going to arrive? The Nokia 808 PureView should become available in May for about $600 (EUR 450), before carrier subsidies.
