Jelly Bean coming soon to Samsung's existing high-end handsets

Earlier this month, it was reported that Samsung would be rolling out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its current flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III by autumn this year. The report had also mentioned two other handsets that are to receive the update and these two handsets are the hugely successful Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II. A recent report by SamMobile has provided an update to the status of this firmware rollout and it states that Samsung will announce the availability of Android Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S III at its IFA official Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 event, whereas the updates for the Galaxy Note and the S II will roll out by the fourth quarter of this year.

Coming soon to the Galaxy S III, Note and S II

The report states, “Samsung is currently working really hard on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for all Samsung Galaxy S III (US Variants + International Variant). We have been really impressed with their progress on the International Galaxy S III (GT-I9300), so far, every new Jelly Bean TEST firmware we got our hands on had a tremendous amount of improvement over the last TEST firmware. Samsung is also somewhat changing the UI a little bit, they are not keeping it like they did with the Galaxy S II/Galaxy Note ICS Update where they kept everything exactly the same as their Gingerbread 2.3 firmware. As for the Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy Note, Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update is currently under heavy development.”

It also adds that at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 event, Samsung will announce the availability of Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S III and this announcement will happen later today.

Here is a quick look at the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S III:

  • 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi with DLNA support
  • GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS
  • USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.0
  • 8 MP camera with AF, LED flash, BSI sensor and 1080p HD video recording
  • 1.9 MP front facing camera with a resolution of 720p for video chat
  • 16/ 32/ 64GB Internal memory, expandable upto 64GB

Later this year, Samsung has plans of introducing a 64GB variety of the Galaxy S III handset. In its statement, Samsung added, “The 64GB model of the Galaxy S III will be available during the second half of this year. The market availability and timing may vary and will be determined at the time of release”.

The global sales of the Galaxy S III has hit the 10 million mark, as per a statement by Shin Jong-kyun, President of Telecoms and IT, Samsung. The news comes merely a couple of months after the official launch of the highly anticipated smartphone. Successor to the company's popular Galaxy S II smartphone, the S III was expected to hit the 10 million mark in July, which it did.
